Happy Independence Day! Hope everyone had a great day. I have lots of photos to share but am a little too tired to get them out of the camera just now. And I watched part of the NCIS marathon. They had the first couple of episodes from Season One. They introduced Kate and how she met the team.

Lots of fireworks still going off around the neighborhood. Sleep now, talk later

Federal Court orders YouTube to turn over viewer data [04 Jul 2008|10:20am]
The Washington Post has coverage here

YouTube will turn over viewer IDs and IP addresses to Viacom. Individuals shouldn't be identifiable from the information and Viacom says it won't use the information to go after individuals. Privacy advocates say that the decision violates the 1998 video privacy act. The article also has interesting information abut YouTube generally.

It's a little troubling. I get my Gmail in exchange for letting Google see what's in my email so they can tailor the ads. So many sites says they respect my privacy, but these huge databases are being created and we don't have a say in what happens with them.

For those of you who don't know yet [04 Jul 2008|09:50am]
The SciFi Channel has scheduled three all day marathons of the Sentinel later this summer! This makes me insanely happy, not least because it might goose along release of the DVDs. The boys on TV again. Yahoo!

Reason #14 I need to move [03 Jul 2008|09:49am]
The twenties still believe in the dishwasher fairy. The big WTF moment came yesterday evening. I'd started the dishwasher before I left for the day. I got home late last night. Someone had taken the silverware basket out of the dishwasher, put some of them away, and left the dirty ones in the sink along with dirty dishes. They did NOT put away any of the clean dishes. Strange.

There's a new promo picture for Season Five out (casting spoiler). The picture is hysterically bad. Go here, look at the picture, and then *be sure* to read all the comments. My coffee went up my nose, I was laughing so hard.

A fun night [01 Jul 2008|10:06am]
I went to a wonderful play reading last night at the Shakespeare Theatre. They have this series where the actors come and read a play from the 17th or 18th century. There are no props, the actors are in street clothes, and they don't memorize the lines. The last couple of times I went, the actors really got into it. Last night was the final and best presentation of the season. The play was The Venetian Twins and it was mistaken identities, missing jewels, and confused lovers all over the place. The actors were very into it, using the portfolios as props, and hamming it up. The surprise guest of the night was Rene Auberjonois as the bad guy. He was fun.

I had dinner with my two friends at a tapas place near the theatre. Scrumptious foods, including a dish called patatas brava. Simply the best upscale version of potato chips ever.

Reasons #12 and #13 why I need to move [30 Jun 2008|01:13pm]
There's a Yahoo group that covers events in my neighborhood. Mostly it's potlucks and yard sales but we also get postings like these two. Which is why I'm looking for a new place to live.

This happened across the street from where I live:

Just a word of caution....yesterday (June 28) I was at the Sunoco station at 1248
Pennsylvania Ave. SE and I was sitting in the passenger seat while my
friend was pumping gas. All of a sudden the back door of the car flew
open and a young male and stole my friends' purse right out of the back
seat! He jumped into a red car with Pennsylvania plates (that his
friend was driving) and sped off. Quite a bold move I must say given
that I was sitting in the car at the time!

Anyway, the owner of the station said that this kind of theft has been
happening at gas stations all over the city. So a word to the wise.

Actually, I see drivers leave their bags behind their seats all the time. I always figured if I was there, it was safe. Not any more.

And then there was this one:

Yesterday afternoon (Thursday, June26) around 5:00pm a tall, slender African American male about 50 years old wearing a fisherman's type tan hat, white tee shirt and tan slacks was making his way through various alleys going through some of our trash cans. His interest was mostly paper items such as receipts and other items which may have personal information on it. He would grab a trash bag, go to a secluded area in the alley, dump the bag and go through the papers, occasionally picking a piece of paper to put in a bag he was carrying. When I observed him, I went out into the alley and chased him out of my alley onto D St. SE. I then went back and got into my car and caught up with him in another alley doing the same thing and drove behind him, beeping my horn until he left that alley. He eventually went north on 17th Street SE past Independence Ave. SE. where I lost him. Several residents saw him in their alley and thought he was acting strangely but they didn't say anything to him.

This individual was observed going through trash cans in the alleys between the 1800 block of D St. SE and Potomac Ave. SE; the alley for the 1800 block between Mass. Ave SE and D St. SE; the alley for the 1800 block between Burke and Bay St. SE; and the alley for the 1700 block between Bay St. SE and Independence Ave. SE. I did not have a cell phone with me to call 911 nor did I see an MPD car.

As a warning: When you get rid of papers, bills, bank statements, etc. use a shredder or tear the items in very small pieces and scatter them in your trash. You never know who will decide to check out your trash and for what reasons. And this guy was doing this in the afternoon during rush hour traffic.

Sheesh.

Indiana Jones and the skull thingy [29 Jun 2008|08:04pm]
I finally got to see Indiana Jones 4 today. To be upfront, I don't go to these summer movies for the plot, I go for the action. And wow! but it delivered. Harrison Ford still has a fine ass and arms, Karen Allen looked great, I never would have known it was John Hurt, and Shia LaBoeuf doesn't do a thing for me. BUT they were all really fine in their roles. I flashed on Sentinel and Stargate while I watched it. I loved the nods to the other Indy movies (the Ark - eeee!). There was only one scene where the CGI threw me out of the moment. All in all, great summer fun. But all of you already know that, I guess.

Random posting [28 Jun 2008|01:19pm]
Because i am procrastinating.

The job that laid me off used its own proprietary software to manage content on its website. They called it Web Transfer Framework. Of course all the screens and documents referred to it by its initials. That's right - WTF. They tried to rename it but somehow the new name never took. Gotta love it.

In other news, I was in the mood for a nice schmoopy read I could take on the bus, with a female heroine. I picked Susan Isaacs "Past Perfect." Excellent read, suitable for the hot weather. She creates great female characters.

And I made a lolcat

Enough of this frivolity. Back to work

Harnessing the untapped power of your people [25 Jun 2008|12:51pm]
so to speak.

"The idea of an energy-generating bra isn't as crazy as it might sound. A company called Triumph International Japan recently unveiled a solar-powered bra that supposedly will generate enough energy to power an iPod. But I live in foggy San Francisco and prefer not to walk around in my underwear in public. Could someone design an iPod-powering bra for me?"

The rest of the story is available on Slate.

I've sometimes wondered if there wasn't a way to harness the energy generated by hot flashes. Doubtless some researcher is working on it
